Alley Oop by The Hollywood Argyles

Alley Oop by The Hollywood Argyles

Look at that cave man go! The golden oldie “Alley Oop” by The Hollywood Argyles is an intersection of comic strip characters, science fiction, rock and roll, doo wop music. The Hollywood Argyles were a studio group put together by producer and songwriter Kim Fowley and Gary Paxton, who was the Flip of the duo Skip & Flip. The recording studio was in Los Angeles on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Argyle Street – hence, their name.

Dallas Frazier wrote “Ally Oop,” which is based on V.T. Hamlin’s comic strip. Alley Oop is a time-traveling caveman from the kingdom of Moo with stone war hammer and pet dinosaur Dinny in tow. His adventures often poked fun at American suburban life. The song went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the R&B Chart in 1960. Sandy Nelson, who had hits as a session and solo drummer, provided the percussion. The piano plays in G minor while the vocals are in G major. This produces a chilling effect – like a 1950s Sci Fi flick.

Here are the lyrics to “Alley Oop” by The Hollywood Argyles:

“(Alley Oop, oop, oop-oop)
(Alley Oop, oop, oop-oop)
There’s a man in the funny papers we all know (Alley Oop, oop, oop-oop)
He lived ‘way back a long time ago (Alley Oop, oop, oop-oop)
He don’t eat nothin’ but a bear cat stew (Alley Oop, oop, oop-oop)
