Another Saturday Night by Sam Cooke

Soul Music

The song “Another Saturday Night” by Sam Cooke has pathos behind it, and is a classic from this first era of rock and roll. The loneliness expressed in the song makes it one of the great golden oldies.

Cooke wrote the song while  touring England in 1962 with Little Richard. It’s also the first song Cooke released after the drowning death of his 18-month-old son Vincent  in 1963. “Another Saturday Night” went to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the R&B Chart in 1963. The song is on his 1964 album Ain’t That Good News, which was the last album released during his lifetime. Cooke’s death later  that year at the age of 33 was one of those strange celebrity deaths. He was shot by the manager of the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles. It was ruled that the manager acted in self-defense, as Cooke was drunk and “distressed.” However, over the years, many details have been questioned.

Here are the lyrics to “Another Saturday Night” by Sam Cooke:

“Another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I got some money ’cause i just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

I got in town a month ago, I seen a lotta girls since then
If I could meet ’em I could get ’em but as yet I haven’t met ’em
That’s why I’m in the shape I’m in

Here another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I got some money ’cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

Another fella told me he had a sister who looked just fine
Instead of being my deliverance, she had a strange resemblance
to a cat named Frankenstein

Here’s another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I got some money ’cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had some chick to talk to
I’m in an awful way

(Here it is another weekend and I ain’t got nobody
Man if I was back home I’d be swinging
Two chicks on my arm
Aww yeah Listen to me huh)

It’s hard on a fella, when he don’t know his way around
If I don’t find me a honey to help me spend my money
I’m gonna have to blow this town

Here it’s another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I got some money ’cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had some chick to talk to I’m in an awful way

[chorus to fade]
