Bobby Darin Dream Lover

Rock and Roll

Singer, songwriter, TV personality, and actor Bobby Darin wrote and recorded “Dream Lover” in 1959. It went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, #4 on the R&B Chart,  and #1 in the U.K.  It became a multi-million seller. The song features Neil Sedaka on the piano. There have been numerous covers, including versions by Bill “Crash” Craddock, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Dalida, Ben E. King, The Paris Sisters, Sandy Posey, Ricky Nelson, Glen Campbell and Tanya Tucker, Don McLean, The Manhattan transfer with James Taylor, Alfio, and The Dollyrots, among others.

Darin did find a dream lover soon after this song was released; he married Sandra Dee.  Due to bouts of rheumatic fever, Darin had a weakened heart and died at the age of 37 in 1973.

Here are the lyrics to “Dream Lover” by Bobby Darin:

“Every night I hope and pray
A dream lover will come my way
A girl to hold in my arms
And know the magic of her charms

‘Cause I want a girl
To call my own
I wanna dream lover
So I don’t have to dream alone

Dream lover, where are you?
With a love, oh, so true
And the hand that I can hold
To feel you near as I grow old

‘Cause I want a girl
To call my own
I wanna dream lover
So I don’t have to dream alone

Someday, I don’t know how
I hope she’ll hear my plea
Someway, I don’t know how
She’ll bring her love to me

Dream lover until then
I’ll go to sleep and dream again
That’s the only thing to do
Till all my lovers dreams come true

‘Cause I want a girl
To call my own
I wanna dream lover
So I don’t have to dream alone

Dream lover until then
I’ll go to sleep and dream again
That’s the only thing to do
Till all my lovers dreams come true

‘Cause I want a girl
To call my own
I wanna dream lover
So I don’t have to dream alone

Please, don’t make me dream alone
I beg you, don’t make me dream alone
No, I don’t wanna dream alone”
