Buddy Knox Party Doll

Buddy Knox with The Rhythm Orchids Party Doll

Rockabilly

The story goes that in 1956, Buddy Knox, from Happy, Texas, and his band the Rhythm Orchids performed with fellow Texan Roy Orbison on a radio show. Orbison recommended that they record with Norman Petty, who had a studio in Clovis, New Mexico, which is where Buddy Holly had recorded some of his early hits. They did, and “Party Doll” was successful for them. This song, which was written by Buddy Knox and Jimmy Bowen, went to #1 on the U.S. Top 100 Chart in 1957. The song is featured in the 1973 film American Graffiti.

Knox was the first Texas rockabilly artist to be awarded an RIAA gold record. He was one of the pioneers of the southwestern style of rockabilly, which was later known as “Tex-Mex” music. The Rhythm Orchids were Jimmy Bowen and Don Lanier, along with Knox.

Here are the lyrics to “Party Doll” by Buddy Knox:

“Well all I want is a party doll
To come along with me when I’m feelin’ wild
To be everlovin’, true and fair
To run her fingers through my hair

Come along and be my party doll
Come along and be my party doll
Come along and be my party doll
I’ll make love to you, to you, I’ll make love to you

Well I saw a gal walkin’ down the street
The kind of a gal I’d love to meet
She had blond hair and eyes of blue
Baby, I wanna have a party with you

Come along and be my party doll
Come along and be my party doll
Come along and be my party doll
I’ll make love to you, to you, I’ll make love to you

Every man has got to have a party doll
To be with him when he’s feelin’ wild
To be everlovin’, true and fair
To run her fingers through his hair
To run her fingers through his hair

Come along and be my party doll
Come along and be my party doll
Come along and be my party doll
I’ll make love to you, to you, I’ll make love to you

Come along and be my party doll
Come along and be my party doll
Come along and be my party doll
I’ll make love to you, to you, I’ll make love to you”
