Music for The Twist

Chubby Checker was born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941 in Spring Gulley, South Carolina, and subsequently grew up in Philadelphia. (The professional moniker Chubby Checker was based the name Fats Domino. The story goes, it came about from a conversation between Dick Clark’s wife and Checker after he had been doing some impressions of singers, including Domino.) Chubby Checker continues to tour and perform.

The song “Let’s Twist Again” was written by Kal Mann and Dave Appell and became one of the biggest hits of 1961. It went to #8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #26 on the R&B Chart. Internationally, it was #1 in the U.K., Belgium, and the Netherlands. It was also in the top 20 in France, German, Italy, and Norway.

Here are the lyrics to “Let’s Twist Again” by Chubby Checker:

“Come on everybody, clap your hands
Ah, you lookin’ good?
I’m gonna sing my song
It won’t take long
We’re gonna do the twist and it goes like this

Come on, let’s twist again like we did last summer
Yeah, let’s twist again like we did last year
Do you remember when things were really hummin’?
Yeah, let’s twist again, twistin’ time is here

Ee, a round and round and up and down we go again
Oh, baby make me know you love me so and then
Twist again like we did last summer
Come on, let’s twist again
Like we did last year
Twist, yo

Who’s that flyin’ up there
Is it a bird? No
Is it a plane? No
Is it the twister? Yeah

Yeah, twist again like we did last summer
Come on, let’s twist again like we twist last year
Do you remember when things were really hummin’?
Come on, let’s twist again, twistin’ time is here

Ee, a round and round and up and down we go again
Oh, baby make me know you love me so and then
Come on, twist again like we did last summer
Girl, let’s twist again
Like we did last year

Come on, let’s twist again
Twistin’ time is here”

For other songs by Chubby Checker: “Pony Time” and “Limbo Rock.”
