Doo Wop
Another one of the beautifully sung doo wop golden oldies is “Daddy’s Home.” It was co-written by lead singer James “Shep” Sheppard and William Miller and became a hit for Shep and The Limelites in 1961. The song went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the R&B Chart. Shep had earlier success with the doo wop R&B group The Hearbeats, especially with their song “A Thousand Miles Away” in 1956, but the group broke up. Roulette/Rama bought the rights from the Hull label and reissued “A Thousand Miles Away” in 1960. It charted, and Shep formed what became known as Shep and The Limelites with Clarence Basset (who had sung with The Five Sharps) and Charles Baskerville (who had sung with The Videos). “Daddy’s Home” was an answer to “A Thousand Miles Away.” It has been covered by numerous artists, including P.J. Proby, Jermaine Jackson, Toots and the Maytals, and Cliff Richard.
