Danny and the Juniors At the Hop

Danny and the Juniors At the Hop

Doo Wop and Rock n Roll

The song was written in 1957 by Artie Singer, John Medora, and David White. When Dick Clark first heard it, the song was called “Do the Bop.” Clark suggested that they change its name. The song became popular after it aired on American Bandstand, eventually reaching  #1 ion the U.S. Pop Chart and #1 on the R&B Chart in 1958. Danny & the Juniors were from Philadelphia and formed in 1955. The group  members were Danny Rapp, Dave White, Frank Maffei, and Joe Terranova. They also had a top 20 hit with “Rock and Roll is Here to Stay,” which went to #19 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #16 on the R&B chart in 1958.

A record hop was a dance sponsored at high schools that was usually held in the gym or cafeteria. The music was supplied by records instead of a live band. The term sock hop came about because dancers sometimes were required to remove their shoes so they didn’t scuff the floors.

Here are the lyrics to “At the Hop” by Danny and The Juniors:

“Bah-bah-bah-bah, bah-bah-bah-bah
Bah-bah-bah-bah. Bah-bah-bah-bah, at the hop!

Well, you can rock it you can roll it
You can stop and you can stroll it at the hop
When the record starts spinnin’
You “chalypso” when you chicken at the hop
Do the dance sensation that is sweepin’ the nation at the hop

Ah, let’s go to the hop
Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let’s go to the hop
Come on, let’s go to the hop

Well, you can swing it you can groove it
You can really start to move it at the hop
Where the jockey is the smoothest
And the music is the coolest at the hop
All the cats and chicks can get their kicks at the hop
Let’s go!

Let’s go to the hop
Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let’s go to the hop
Come on, let’s go to the hop
Let’s go!

Well, you can rock it you can roll it
You can stop and you can stroll it at the hop
When the record starts spinnin’
You “chalypso” when you chicken at the hop
Do the dance sensation that is sweepin’ the nation at the hop

You can swing it you can groove it
You can really start to move it at the hop
Where the jockey is the smoothest
And the music is the coolest at the hop.
All the cats and chicks can get their kicks at the hop.
Let’s go!

Let’s go to the hop
Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let’s go to the hop
Come on, let’s go to the hop

Bah-bah-bah-bah, bah-bah-bah-bah
Bah-bah-bah-bah. Bah-bah-bah-bah, at the hop!”
