Soft Rock
The song, sung and recorded by Elvis Presley, was featured in the 1961 film Blue Hawaii and on the soundtrack album of the same name. The tune has an interesting history, in that it is based on an 18th-century piece titled “Plaisir d’Amour” by Jean Paul Egide Martini, who wrote music for the court of Marie Antoinette as well as Napoleon. Presley’s version peaked at #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Easy Listening Chart that year. The single was backed with “Rock-A-Hula Baby.”
Blue Hawaii tells the story of Chadwick Gates, who is played by Presley. He has just returned home to Hawaii from a stint in the Army. Although his mother pressures him to work at the Great Southern Hawaiian Fruit Company, he chooses to work as a tour guide at his girlfriend’s agency.
