Elvis’ Can’t Help Falling in Love With You

Blue Hawaii Print for Elvis birthday

Soft Rock

The song,  sung and recorded by Elvis Presley, was featured in the 1961 film Blue Hawaii and on the soundtrack album of the same name. The tune has an interesting history, in that it is based on an 18th-century piece titled “Plaisir d’Amour” by Jean Paul Egide Martini, who wrote music for the court of Marie Antoinette as well as Napoleon. Presley’s version peaked at #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Easy Listening Chart that year. The single was backed with “Rock-A-Hula Baby.”

Blue Hawaii tells the story of Chadwick Gates, who is played by Presley. He has just returned home to Hawaii from a stint in the Army. Although his mother pressures him to work at the Great Southern Hawaiian Fruit Company, he chooses to work as a tour guide at his girlfriend’s agency.

Here are the lyrics to “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley:

“Wise men say only fools rush in
But I can’t help falling in love with you
Shall I stay, would it be a sin
If I can’t help falling in love with you

Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be

Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can’t help falling in love with you

Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be

Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can’t help falling in love with you
For I can’t help falling in love with you”

For other songs by Elvis Presley: “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame,” “Love Me Tender,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Soldier Boy,” “Don’t be Cruel,” “Suspicious Minds,” and “If I Can Dream.”
