Elvis Presley His Latest Flame

Rockin and Rollin

Rock and roll has many story-songs about fickle girlfriends. Ah, love can be so unkind. The song was written by the team of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, who during the 1950s and 1960s composed more than 500 songs for artists. (For example, a very short list includes the songs “Turn Me Loose,” “A Teenager in Love,” “Save the Last Dance for Me,” and “Hushabye.”) The original recording of “His Latest Flame” was  by Del Shannon for his album Runaway With Del Shannon in 1961. Elvis, who was back from the army and busy resuming his music and film career, recorded and published the tune. The song features the infectious “Bo Diddley” beat and a hot piano part. It reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961 and became an RIAA Certified Gold Record. The A-Side, “Little Sister,” was also a hit.

Here are the lyrics to “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame:

A very old friend came by today
‘Cause he was telling everyone in town
About the love that he just found
And Marie’s the name of his latest flame

He talked and talked and I heard him say
That she had the longest blackest hair
The prettiest green eyes anywhere
And Marie’s the name of his latest flame

Though I smiled the tears inside were a-burning
I wished him luck and then he said goodbye
He was gone but still his words kept returning
What else was there for me to do but cry

Would you believe that yesterday
This girl was in my arms and swore to me
She’d be mine eternally
And Marie’s the name of his latest flame

Though I smiled the tears inside were a-burning
I wished him luck and then he said goodbye
He was gone but still his words kept returning
What else was there for me to do but cry
Would you believe that yesterday
This girl was in my arms and swore to me
She’d be mine eternally
And Marie’s the name of his latest flame
