Gary U.S. Bonds School is Out

Gary U.S. Bonds School is Out

R&B

It was often a great feeling  and a relief when you got a break from school! In 1961, the “School Is Out” by Gary U.S. Bonds went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #12 on the R&B Chart.

Gary U.S. Bonds was born Gary Levone Anderson in Jacksonville, Forida. The stage name, so it goes,  was a marketing choice to tell folks to “Buy U.S. Bonds.” Bonds is a prolific songwriter as well as a singer. Bonds also had hits with “Quarter to Three,” “New Orleans,” and “Dear Lady Twist.” He continues to tour and perform .

Here are the lyrics to “School is Out” by Gary U.S. Bonds:

A-one, a-two, a-one two three four

No more books and studies
And I can stay out late with my buddies
I can do the things that I want to do
‘Cause all my exams are through
I can root for the Yankees from the bleachers
And don’t have to worry ’bout teachers
And I’m so glad that school is out
I could sing and shout!

Everybody’s gonna have some fun
(School is out)
Everybody’s gonna jump and run
(School is out)
Come on people don’t you be late
(School is out)
I just got time to take my girl out on a date
School is out at last
And I’m so glad I passed
So everybody come and go with me
We’re gonna have a night with Daddy G
Go Daddy!!

That’s great!
Let’s celebrate!
With a little bit of soul now!
Oh yeah!
The party’s here!

Everybody’s gonna have some fun
(School is out)
Everybody’s gonna jump and run
(School is out)
Come on people don’t you be late
(School is out)
I just got time to take my girl out on a date
School is out at last
And I’m so glad I passed
So everybody come and go with me
We’re gonna have a night with Daddy G
Go Daddy!!

Fade on chorus

The Daily Doo Wop Rec Room has daily featured doo wop music, rock and roll hits, R&B, or rockabilly songs that were hits during the first era of rock and roll (that is, from about 1952 until the British invasion in 1964). After a song is featured, it then goes into the juke box. You are welcome to listen to any of the 40+ selections there. Every weekend, there is a Golden Oldies Juke Box Saturday Night, and the juke box is full of song requests from the 1950s and 1960s.
