Hey Paula by Paul and Paula

Paul and Paula Hey Paula

Pop Music

Ray Hildebrand and Jill Jackson, both from Texas, formed the group Paul and Paula in 1962. They were students at Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas. “Hey Paula,” written by Hildebrand, went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B Chart in 1963. One story is that the song “Hey Paula” was inspired by Annette Funicello’s hit song “Tall Paul.”

(Ah the battles over misheard lyrics. In the film Animal House, the characters argue over whether the line from “Hey Paula” is “I’ve waited so long for school to be through” or “get through.”)

Paul and Paula disbanded in 1965. Over the years, they have pursued solo careers but have sung together once in a while for special events.

Here are the lyrics to “Hey Paula” by Paul and Paula:

“Hey, hey Paula, I wanna marry you
Hey, hey Paula, no one else could ever do
I’ve waited so long for school to be through
Paula, I can’t wait no more for you
My love, my love

Hey Paul, I’ve been waiting for you
Hey, hey, hey Paul, I want to marry you too
If you love me true, if you love me still, our love will always be real
My love, my love

True love means planning a life for two
Being together the whole day through
True love means waiting and hoping that soon wishes we’ve made will come true
My love, my love
Hey, hey Paula, I’ve been waiting for you
Hey, hey Paul, I want to marry you too
True love means planning a life for two
Being together the whole day through
True love means waiting and hoping that soon wishes we’ve made will come true
My love, my love”

The Daily Doo Wop Rec Room has daily featured doo wop, rock and roll, R&B, or rockabilly songs that were hits during the first era of rock and roll (that is, from about 1952 until the British invasion in 1964). After a song is featured, it then goes into the juke box. You are welcome to listen to any of the 40+ selections there. Every weekend, there is a Golden Oldies Juke Box Saturday Night, and the juke box is full of song requests from the 1950s and 1960s.
