I Want You To Be My Girl by Frankie Lymon

Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers I Want You to Be My Girl

Doo Wop

The song “I Want You to Be My Girl,” which is a doo wop classic, is by Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers together with Jimmy Wright & His Orchestra.

Ah, young love. The song is credited to record label executive George Goldner and singer/songwriter/producer Richard Barrett, although the story goes that Herman Santiago wrote it in 1955 and the group used it to audition for Goldner. But the details get hazy. Anyway, the song went to #3 on the R&B Chart and #13 on the U.S. Pop Chart in 1956. Group members on the song included Frankie Lymon, Herman Santiago, Sherman Garnes, Jimmy Merchants, and Joe Negroni.

Lymon lived till the age of 25, but he left quite a legacy. His clear, high voiced influenced many artists, including  The Jackson 5, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, and The Beach Boys, among many others.

Here are the lyrics to “I Want You To Be My Girl” by Frankie Lyman and The Teenagers:

“I love you, baby
And I want you to be my girl
Well, come on, baby, let’s go downtown
Run, jump, kid around
I love you, baby
And I want you to be my girl

Well, come on, baby, I love you so
I will never, never let you go
Come on, baby, will you treat me nice?
Please, don’t put my love on ice
I love you, baby
And I want you to be my girl

Come and take me by the hand
Tell me, I’m your lover man
We’ll have fun, just we two
You for me, me for you, oh, oh
I love you, baby
And I want you to be my girl

Well, come on, baby, I love you so
I will never, never let you go
Come on, baby, will you treat me nice
Please, don’t put my love on ice
I love you, baby
And I want you to be my girl

Come and take me by the hand
Tell me, I’m your lover man
You for me, me for you
We’ll have fun, oh, oh, oh
I love you, baby
And I want you to be my girl

Well, I love you, baby
Love you, baby, love you, baby
I love you, baby
And I want you to be my girl”
