Image of a Girl by The Safaris

"Image of a Girl" by The Safaris

Vocal Surf Rock

This golden oldie, “Image of a Girl,” was written by group Safaris members Richard Clasky and Marvin Rosenberg. Jimmy Stephens sang lead. The sound of the clock is a nice feature. In 1960, it rose to #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. British singer and actor Mark Wynter covered the song in 1960, and his version went to #11 in the U.K. In 1963, Los Angeles DJ Lloyd Thaxton had a regionally charting hit with his cover with changes titled “Image of a Surfer.” Thaxton rewrote the lyrcis to include names of local beaches.

The Safaris formed in Los Angeles in 1959 and were active until 1963. They also charted with their cover of “Wipe Out,” which was by The Surfaris. Past members included Clasky, Rosenberg, Stephens and Sheldon Breier.

Here are the lyrics to “Image of a Girl” by The Safaris:

“As I lie awake resting from the day
I can hear the clock passing time away
Oh, I couldn’t sleep for on my mind
Was the image of the girl I hope to find
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh

I look straight up at the ceiling above
Thinking of the girl whom I will love
Oh, would it be soon when she exists?
The image of the girl
I’ve always wished
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh

I twisted and I turned, ooh, trying to sleep
But all I could do was only to weep
For I haven’t found that image yet
Of all the girls that I have met

And now the clock is still passing time
And I know someday that she will be mine
And I know she’ll always bring me love
For she’s the image of the girl I love

Whoa, (image of a girl) oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh (image of a girl) oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh (image of a girl)
FADE”

For More Golden Oldies Music

The Daily Doo Wop Rec Room has daily featured doo wop music, rock and roll hits, R&B, or rockabilly songs that were hits during the first era of rock and roll (that is, from about 1952 until the British invasion in 1964). After a song is featured, it then goes into the juke box. You are welcome to listen to any of the 40+ selections there. Every weekend, there is a Golden Oldies Juke Box Saturday Night, and the juke box is full of song requests from the 1950s and 1960s.
