Lesley Gore It’s My Party

Lesley Gore It's My Party

Pop Music

Love can certainly be heart-breaking, especially when it’s your birthday party and your boyfriend disappears and then reappears with another girl. In 1963, this pop rock song went to #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 an R&B charts for the sixteen-year-old Lesley Gore. The legendary Quincy Jones produced the record. The record features a virtuoso performance by the triangle player–such a complex part! The follow-up song to this teenage love dilemma was Gore’s song “Judy’s Turn to Cry.” Revenge can be sweet.

Gore went on to have many hits, including “She’s a Fool,” “You Don’t Own Me,” “Look of Love,” and “Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows.”

Here are the lyrics to “It’s My Party” by Lesley Gore:

It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you

Nobody knows where my Johnny has gone
But Judy left the same time
Why was he holding her hand
When he’s supposed to be mine

It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you

Playin’ my records, keep dancin’ all night
But leave me alone for a while
Till Johnny’s dancin’ with me I’ve got no reason to smile

It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you

Judy and Johnny just walked through the door
Like a queen with her king
Oh what a birthday surprise
Judy’s wearin’ his ring

It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you

Oh it’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you

It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to

The Daily Doo Wop Rec Room has daily featured doo wop, rock and roll, R&B, or rockabilly songs that were hits during the first era of rock and roll (that is, from about 1952 until the British invasion in 1964). After a song is featured, it then goes into the juke box. You are welcome to listen to any of the 40+ selections there. Every weekend, there is a Golden Oldies Juke Box Saturday Night, and the juke box is full of song requests from the 1950s and 1960s.
