Little Richard Long Tall Sally

Little Richard Long Tall Sally

Rock and Roll

This song was written by Robert “Bumps” Blackwell, Enotris Johnson, and Richard Wayne Penniman (that is, the real name of Little Richard). It has become a rock and roll standard covered by hundreds of artists. Just to name a few, there have been covers by Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps,  and The Beatles.  In 1956, Little Richard’s single went to #6 on the U.S. Pop Charts and #1 on the R&B chart. (One story has it that there really was a Long Tall Sally, who liked her whiskey – and Uncle John.) The B-Side was “Slippin’ and Slidin’.” “Long Tall Sally” is on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Little Richard is a legend as a musician, songwriter, recording artist and showman. He is one of the architects of rock and roll.

Here are the lyrics to “Long Tall Sally” by Little Richard:

“Gonna tell Aunt Mary ’bout Uncle John,
He claim he has the misery but he’s havin’ a lot of fun,
Oh baby, yeah baby, woo
Havin’ me some fun tonight yeah

Well long, tall Sally
She’s built for speed, she got
Everything that Uncle John need, oh baby,
Yeah baby, woo baby,
Havin’ me some fun tonight yeah

Well, I saw Uncle John with long tall Sally.
He saw Aunt Mary comin’ and he ducked back in the alley oh baby,
Yeah baby, woo baby,
Havin’ me some fun tonight, yeah ow

Well, long, tall Sally
She’s built for speed, she got
Everything that Uncle John need oh baby,
Yeah baby, woo baby,
Havin’ me some fun tonight yeah

Well, I saw Uncle John with bald head Sally.
He saw Aunt Mary comin’ and he ducked back in the alley oh baby,
Yeah baby, woo baby,
Havin’ me some fun tonight, yeah

We gonna have some fun tonight,
We gonna have some fun tonight, woo
Have some fun tonight, everything’s all right,
Have some fun, have me some fun tonight.”
