Lou Christie The Gypsy Cried

Lou Christie The Gypsy Cried

Pop Music

The song was written by Lou Christie and his long-time associate songwriter/psychic Twyla Herbert.  She was a “bohemian gypsy, psychic, and former concert pianist.” She was a clairvoyant and claimed that they would have hit songs together.  And they did have a Top 40 hit in 1963 with “The Gypsy Cried,” as it went to #24 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Lou Christie was born Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco in Glenwillard, Pennsylvania. Roulette Records changed his name to “Lou Christie” without Sacco’s permission. He did not like that: “I was pissed off about it for 20 years. I wanted to keep my name.” Christie was among the first singer-songwriters of the era, and he is known for his ability to change effortlessly from normal register to falsetto.  John Lennon always liked Christie’s music and referred to Christie as “a truly creative person.”  Christie continues to  tour and perform.

Here are the lyrics to “The Gypsy Cried” by Lou Christie:

I had some trouble with my baby
So I had my fortune read
I had some trouble with my baby
And this is what the gypsy said

The gypsy cried, she cried
“Gypsy, oh tell me, what is in your crystal ball
Gypsy, oh tell me, will my tears fall?”
She cried, she cried and said

“Watch your step, ooh she’ll hurt you yet
Oh no no no no no no no
Watch your step, ooh she’ll hurt you yet
Oh no no no no no no no”

“Gypsy, oh tell me, does she want to marry me?
Gypsy, oh tell me, when the wedding’s gonna be?”
She cried, she cried

“Listen to what the gypsy said
Oh no no no no no no no
Listen to what the gypsy said
Oh no no no no no no no”

“Gypsy, say it isn’t true”
“Watch out, ooh she doesn’t love you
Watch out, ooh she doesn’t love you”
“Gypsy, say it isn’t true”
“Watch out, ooh she doesn’t love you”

I’ll add “How Many Teardrops?” to the 3 Christie songs already mentioned. I have the 45’s
for all 4. A friend of mine saw him at Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den in CT a few years ago and said he sounded great.
