Lou Christie Two Faces Have I

Lou Christie Two Faces Have I

Pop Music

The song was written by Lou Christie and his long-time associate songwriter/psychic Twyla Herbert. (She was a clairvoyant who claimed they would have hit songs together. They did.) “Two Faces Have I” was indeed a hit, and it went to #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, #11 on the R&B chart, and #20 in Australia in 1963.

Christie was born Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco in Glenwillard, Pennsylvania. On releasing his first hit, “The Gypsy Cried,” Roulette Records changed his name to “Lou Christie” without Sacco’s permission. He did not like that: “I was pissed off about it for 20 years. I wanted to keep my name.” Christie was among the first singer-songwriters of the era, and he is known for his ability to change effortlessly from normal register to falsetto. John Lennon always liked Christie’s music and referred to Christie as “a truly creative person.” Christie continues to tour and perform.

Here are the lyrics to “Two Faces Have I” by Lou Christie:

“I don’t want the world to know
I don’t want my heart to show

Two faces have I
I pretend that I’m happy
But I’m Mr. blue
I pretend that I’m happy
Since I lost you

Two faces have I
One to laugh and one to cry
Two faces have I
One to laugh and one to cry

Will I ever laugh again
She’ll never see me cry
Will I walk with a smile on my face
Knowing I live a lie

I pretend that I’m carefree
But what am I
I pretend that I’m carefree
But I’m living a lie

Two faces have I
One to laugh and one to cry
Two faces have I
One to laugh and one to cry”

For other songs by Lou Christie: “The Gypsy Cried” and “Lightnin’ Strikes.”
