Mary Wells The One Who Really Loves You

Mary Wells The One Who Really Loves You

Motown Soul Music

The lyrics have a girl tell the one she loves that her love is true, not like that of the other girls he seems to be interested in. And he better realize that before it’s too late. The song was recorded for Detroit’s new Motown label in 1962. Smokey Robinson wrote and produced the song, which peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B Chart. This song showed soft, feminine side of the young Mary Wells. Those gorgeous backgrounds are Motown Record’s in-house chorus the Love Tones. Instrumentation is provided by the session musicians The Funk Brothers.

The kids did a dance called the Uncle Willie to this one. It involved spreading your feet about a foot apart and moving them in unison from side to side; it never caught on outside of the Motor City.

Here are the lyrics to “The One Who Really Loves You” by Mary Wells:

“Some other girls are filling your head with jive
So now you’re acting like you don’t know that I’m alive
Love, you better wake up, yeah, before we break up
And you lose me, look to me, the one who really loves you

Susie only wants you until the day
That she’ll again have her true love who’s far, far away
So love, you better wake up, yeah, before we break up
And you lose me, look to me, the one who really loves you

Jenny only wants you ’cause she thinks she has to have everyone
Minnie only wants you ’cause she think that hurting me would be fun
Silly Lilly, you know she doesn’t really want you with a love that’s true
In fact, there’s no other girl in this whole wide world
Who can love you like I do

They get tired of you and they’re gonna put you down
Then they ain’t gonna want you hanging around
So love, you better wake up, yeah, before we break up
And you lose me, look to me, the one who really loves you

I do really, really love you”
