The song “Night” is usually categorized as pop music, although it has classical origins and is sung by an artist of many genres. Jackie Wilson recorded and released the song “Night” in 1960. It went to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the R&B Chart. “Night” is based on an aria from Samson and Delilah, an opera by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The aria is “Mon coeur s’ouvre à ta voix,” (translated literally as “My heart opens itself to your voice”), and is sung by Delilah. Johnny Lehmann provided new lyrics (in English) for “Night.” Wilson’s performance of the song shows his versatility and his extensive vocal range.
Jackie Wilson (1934-1984), from Detroit, had more than 50 singles in many genres, including R&B, pop, and soul. His musical pioneering and performing influenced generations of artists.
