Rubber Ball by Bobby Vee

Bobby Vee Rubber Ball

Pop Music

The song “Rubber Ball” was a pop hit in 1960 and early 1961. It was also the record that made Bobby Vee an international star. The song was produced by the 19-year-old Texan Thomas “Snuff” Garrett and arranged by Ernie Freeman. It was co-written at the Brill Building in New York by Gene Pitney, using his mother’s maiden name (that is, A. Orlowski) and by Aaron Schroeder. Bobby Vee delivers the song in a Buddy Holly style. “Rubber Ball” went to #6 on the U.S. Billboard hot 100. It was a breakthrough hit for Bobby Vee in the U.K., where it reached #4. In Australia, it went to #1. The record also marked Vee’s first use of overdubbing his second vocal. “Rubber Ball” has been covered by Marty Wilde as well as Gary Lewis and the Playboys.

Here are the lyrics to “Rubber Ball” by Bobby Vee:

“Rubber ball, I come bouncin’ back to you,
Rubber ball, I come bouncin’ back to you
Hoo-ah-ooh-ooh.
I’m like a – rubber ball, baby that’s all
That I am to you (bouncy, bouncy) (bouncy, bouncy)
Just a rubber ball ‘cuz you think you
Can be true to two (bouncy, bouncy) (bouncy, bouncy).
You bounce my heart around (You don’t even put her down)
And like a rubber ball, I come bouncin’ back to you
Rubber ball, I come bouncin’ back to you.
If you – stretch my love ’til it’s thin enough to tear
I’ll just stretch my arms to reach you anywhere
And like a –
Rubber ball, I’ll come bouncin’ back to you
Rubber ball, I’ll come bouncin’ back to you
(Instrumental)
You bounce my heart around (You don’t even put her down)
And like a rubber ball, I come bouncin’ back to you
Rubber ball, I come bouncin’ back to you
Hoo-ah-ooh-ooh.
Bouncy, bouncy… Bouncy, bouncy
Bouncy, bouncy… Bouncy, bouncy
Eee-ah-eee-eee;
I’m like a – rubber band when on my shoulder
You do tap (bouncy, bouncy) (bouncy, bouncy).
Just a rubber band because my heart-strings,
They just snap (bouncy, bouncy) (bouncy, bouncy)
You go and: squeeze me ’til I’m all aflame
(She calls you by some other guy’s name)
But like a rubber ball, I come bouncin’ back to you
Rubber ball, I come bouncin’ back to you
Rubber ball, I’ll come bouncin’ back to you
Rubber ball, I’ll come bouncin’ back to you
Rubber ball, I’ll come bouncin’ back to you
Rubber ball, etc… ”
