Pop Standard
The song “Till” is a pop standard written by Charles Danvers (music) and Carl Sigman (English lyrics). It was based on the French song “Prière San Espoir,” which was recorded with French lyrics in 1956 by Lucien Lupi. (The translation of the title into English is “A Prayer Without Hope.”) Percy Faith recorded the English version in 1957. “Till” was the first national hit for The Angels and rose to #14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. There have been numerous covers, including versions by Roger Williams, Shirley Bassey, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, Dick and Dee Dee, The vogues, Bobby Vinton, Earl GRant, and Tom Jones, just to name a few.
The Angels, one of the era’s girl groups, were originally from New Jersey (first called The Starlets). They changed membership over the years. At the time of this song, the group consisted of sisters Barbara and Phyllis Allbut and Linda Jansen. The Angeles were best known for their 1963 #1 hit single “My Boyfriend’s Back.”
