The Chordettes Lollipop

The Chordettes Lollipop

Pop Music

The song “Lollipop” was written by Julius Dixson (sometimes spelled Dixon) and Beverly Ross  in 1958 for the duo Ronald & Ruby (Ronald Gumm and Ross), who recorded it. One story about the song’s origins involve Dixson being  late for a songwriting session with Ross. He said that had to help his daughter with a lollipop stuck in her hair, and this caused the delay. Ross liked the word “lollipop,” so she sat down at the piano and wrote the song.  Ronald & Ruby were an interracial pop group, which was unusual at the time. Their version reached #20 on the Billboard Pop Chart. The cover by The Chordettes, the female vocal group from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, known for their close harmony, was very successful. “Lollipop” reached #2 and #3 on the Billboard Pop and R&B charts, respectively. The song also went to #6 on the U.K. Chart. The biggest charting record for The Chordettes was “Mr. Sandman.”

Here are the lyrics to “Lollipop” by The Chordettes:

“Lollipop, lollipop

Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop, lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop
ba boom boom boom

Lollipop, lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop, lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop
ba boom boom boom

Call my baby lollipop, tell you why
His kiss is sweeter than an apple pie
And when he does his shaky rockin’ dance
Man, I haven’t got a chance

I call him lollipop, lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop, lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop
ba boom boom boom

Sweeter than candy on a stick
Huckleberry, cherry or lime
If you had a choice he’d be your pick
But lollipop is mine

Lollipop, lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop
ba boom boom boom

Crazy way he thrills me, tell you why
Just like a lightning from the sky
He loves to kiss me till I can’t see straight
Gee, my lollipop is great

Lollipop, lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop
ba boom boom boom …”
