The Dell Vikings Whispering Bells

The Dell Vikings Whispering Bells

Doo Wop

The Dell Vikings (aka Del Vikings, Del-Vikings, Dell-Vikings) formed in 1955 in Pittsburgh, where all the members were stationed in the U.S. Air Force. The group throughout the years has had many personnel, group name, and label-affiliation changes. “Whispering Bells” was issued simultaneously on Fee Bee and Dot record labels in May 1957 due to contractual issues (it gets complicated). The song, which was written by group member Clarence Quick, went to #9 on the Pop Chart and #5 on the R&B Chart. The bell sounds in “Whispering Bells” aren’t chimes but are created using a guitar. There’s a driving, tap-dancing snare drum rhythm, and lead vocalist Krips Johnson uses beautiful high arpeggios to complement the soaring alto sax lines. Group members for the song were Quick, Johnson, Norman Wright, David Lerchey, and Donald “Gus” Backus.

Here are the lyrics to “Wispering Bells” by The Dell Vikings:

“Ding, ding, ding…

Whispering bells
Whisper low
Whispering bells
Love you so
Bring my baby, oh
My baby back to me
(Baby back to me)

Whispering bells
Loud and clear
Your sweet chimes
Love to hear
Bring my baby, oh
My baby back to me
(Baby back to me)

Whispering bells
Whisper low
Whispering bells
Love you so
Bring my baby, oh
My baby back to me
(Baby back to me)

Ooh, ooo ooo…
(Baby back to me)

Whispering bells
Loud and clear
Your sweet chimes
Love to hear
Bring my baby, oh
My baby back to me
Oh, whispering bells
Oh, whispering bells…”
