Doo Wop Groups
Ah, love. It’s complicated, isn’t it? The song, which was written by Billy Hill and recorded by Benny Goodman recorded in 1936, is a pop and jazz standard. The version by The Five Keys, a Rhythm and Blues and doo wop group, went to #1 on the R&B chart in 1951. There have been many covers, including those by Billy Cotton and his Orchestra, Peggy Lee, Dean Martin, The Velvetones, Big Bill Broonzy, Otis Redding, Tom Rush, Jimmy Durante, Eddy Arnold, Bette Midler, and Paul McCartney, just to name a few.
The Five Keys formed in Newport News, Virginia, in the late 1940s, and there were numerous personnel changes over the years. Group members on this record were Rudy West (with his beautiful lead vocal), Bernie West, Ripley Ingram, Raphael Ingram, and Maryland Pierce.
