The Four Seasons Walk Like a Man

Doo Wop

The song “Walk Like a Man” is a classic doo wop song  from one of the best doo wop groups, the Jersey Boys, aka The Four Seasons The song, written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio, beautifully balances the falsetto of Frankie Valli with the bass voice of Nick Massi. The song went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. It was their third #1 hit (i.e., after “Sherry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”). The story behind the recording is that there was a fire in the studio while they were working. Producer Bob Crewe kept them all going, even when they smelled smoke and heard the fire engines. The recording did not stop until firemen used their axes and broke through the door to get the musicians out.

“Walk Like A Man” is featured in numerous films, including The Wanderers (1979), Heart and Souls (1993), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), and Sleepers (1996). Sometimes baseball stadiums play the song when their team draws a walk.

Here are the lyrics to “Walk Like a Man” by The Four Seasons:

“Ooh, walk, walk, walk, walk
Ooh, walk like a man

Oh, how you tried
To cut me down to size
Telling dirty lies to my friends

But my own father said
Give her up don’t bother
The world isn’t coming to an end

He said it, walk like a man
Talk like a man
Walk like a man my son

No woman’s worth
Crawling on the earth
So walk like a man, my son

Ooh, walk, walk, walk, walk
Ooh

Bye baby I don’t mean maybe
Gonna get along some how

Soon you’ll be crying
On the count of all your lying
Oh yeah, just look who’s laughing now

I’m gonna, walk like a man
Fast as I can
Walk like a man from you

I’ll tell the world
Forget about it girl
And walk like a man from you

Ooh, walk, walk, walk, walk
Ooh, walk, walk, walk, walk
Ooh, walk, walk, walk, walk”

For More Golden Oldies Music

The Daily Doo Wop Rec Room has daily featured doo wop, rock and roll, R&B, or rockabilly songs that were hits during the first era of rock and roll (that is, from about 1952 until the British invasion in 1964). After a song is featured, it then goes into the juke box. You are welcome to listen to any of the 40+ selections there. Every weekend, there is a Juke Box Saturday, and the juke box is full of song requests from the 1950s and 1960s.

Didn’t know that “Sometimes baseball stadiums play the song when their team draws a walk.” thanks. I’ll have to pay closer attention to walks when I watch my NY Yankees play. First regular season game 4 weeks from today. Saw Jersey Boys at TPAC 9 years ago. Great show.
