The G Clefs I Understand

"I Understand (Just How You Feel)" by The G-Clefs

Doo Wop

With thoughts of New Year’s Eve and Auld Lang Syne, there’s the golden oldie “I Understand (Just How You Feel)” by The G-Clefs.

The song was written by Pat Best and published in 1953. There were charting versions by The Four Tunes (of which Best was a member) and June Valli. The cover by The G-Clefs of “I Understand (Just How You Feel)”  interweaves the tune and words of  “Auld Lang Syne.”  In 1961 the song peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #17 on the U.K. Singles Chart.  was in 1961. The 1965 version by Freddie and the Dreamers has also been popular.

The G-Clefs were four brothers plus a childhood friend. They began performing in the Roxbury in Boston  in the early 1950s. Group members included Teddy Scott, Chris Scott, Tim “Payme” Scott, Llanga Scott, and Ray Gibson. Their first top forty hit was the 1956 single “Ka-Ding-Dong,” which featured Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon on guitar. They were known for their choreography and exciting performances as well.

Here’s to a Happy New Year!!!

Here are the lyrics to “I Understand” by The G-Clefs:

I understand just how you feel
Your love for me, why not be mine
It’s over now but it was grand
I understand, I understand

If you ever change your mind
Come back to me and you will find
Me waiting there, at your command
I understand, I understand

I miss you so, please believe me when I tell you
I just can’t stand to see you go
You know

If you ever change your mind
Come back to me and you will find
Me waiting there at your command
I understand, I understand

[Spoken:]
“I understand just how you feel
Let bygones be bygones
But always remember I love you
I love you, I love you”

(We’ll sip a cup of wine, my dear, for Auld Lang Syne)
I understand
