The Mountain’s High by Dick and Dee Dee

Dick and Dee Dee The Mountain's High

Pop Rock

In 1961 Dick St. John and Mary Sperling (aka Dee Dee Sperling and then Dee Dee Phelps) worked together at a See’s Candies store in Los Angeles. On lunch breaks, he would start singing and she joined in with a harmony. They loved the sound so much they bought time at a local recording studio and produced it under the name Dick and Dee Dee. The A-Side was “I Want Someone,” but the B-Side, which had “The Mountain’s High,” became the first of many successful records for the duo. The song went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961 and became an RIAA gold record. They disbanded in 1969. Over the past few years, Dee Dee Phelps has  teamed up with Michael Dunn and, more recently, Jan (Deke) Detanna to perform.

Here are the lyrics to “The Mountain’s High” by Dick and Dee Dee :

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yea-hea, yea-hea, yea-hea yea-hea
The mountains high and the valleys so deep
Can’t get across to the other si-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hide
Don’t ya give up baby, don’t you cry
Don’t ya give up till I reach the other si-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hide

I was lonely baby, I couldn’t sleep
The night they took you from my si-hi-hi-hi-hi-hide

I was a lonely soul
Until you became my goal
And then I saw the spark of love
And then the stars fell from (up above OH YEAH!)

I know someday we will meet again
But I don’t know exactly where or whe-he-he-he-he-he-hen
But baby, if fate has its way
We’ll meet again some other day-aaaaaaaaaayyy
The mountains high and the valleys so deep
Can’t get across to the other si-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hide
Don’t ya give up baby, dont you cry
Don’t ya give up till I reach the other si-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hide

Hoo hoo hoo ( know it to tell ya)
Hoo hoo hoo hoo (I know it to tell ya)
I know, I know hoohoo hoo hoo

FADES-

I know, I know hoo hoo hoo hoo
The valleys deep baby…

The Daily Doo Wop Rec Room has daily featured doo wop music, rock and roll hits, R&B, or rockabilly songs that were hits during the first era of rock and roll (that is, from about 1952 until the British invasion in 1964). After a song is featured, it then goes into the juke box. You are welcome to listen to any of the 40+ selections there. Every weekend, there is a Golden Oldies Juke Box Saturday Night, and the juke box is full of song requests from the 1950s and 1960s.
