Doo Wop Music
The song was recorded in 1957, and in 1958 it went to #4 on the R&B Chart and #24 on the U.S. Pop Chart (and remained there for 16 weeks). Group members were DiFosco (Big Dee Irwin) Ervin, James Willingham, Richard Travis, and Tony Thomas. They were from different places throughout the country (i.e., New York, Ohio, Minnesota), and came together in Greenland, courtesy of the U.S. Air Force. They were in a talent contest in 1956 at an Air Force Talent Show against the Dell Vikings. The Dell Vikings won, though, with “Come Go With Me” (hard to beat that). Anyway, “Been So Long” features some beautiful singing and is a doo wop classic.
