Doo Wop Groups
The song “Only You (And You Alone)” by The Platters is one of the great golden oldies by one of the great doo wop groups. Sometimes you do find the right person for you, as the song says: “Only you can make this change in me / for it’s true, you are my destiny.” The song, which was recorded in 1955, went to #1 on the R&B Chart and #5 on the Pop Chart in 1956. Buck Ram, who was their manager and producer at the time, wrote the song. Ram also plays piano on the recording. Group members for “Only You” include Herbert Reed, David Lynch, Paul Robi, and Zola Taylor. Tony Williams provides the lead vocals. There have been a multitude of covers of the song from artists around the world, including versions by Ringo Starr, Malcolm Vaughan, Brenda Lee, Bobby Hatfield, Jeff Collins, Stein Ingebrigtsen, The Stylisitics, Luis Miguel, Reba McEntire, Travis Trett, Child, John Alford, Shikao Suga, Stevie Holland, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Diana Ross, Train, and many more.
The Platters formed in Los Angeles and were pioneers of this first era of rock and roll, combining R&B, doo wop, pop, and rock.
