Doo Wop

One of the best songs from one of the best vocal harmony groups of the doo wop era is the golden oldie  “Twilight Time” as sung by The Platters. The beautiful lyrics for “Twilight Time” were written by songwriter, producer and arranger Buck Ram.  The music was written by The Three Suns (Morty Nevins, Al Nevins, and Artie Dunn), who originally recorded the song. They had a hit with it in 1944. Les Brown & HIs Band of Renown did a popular instrumental  version in 1945. And  Jimmy Dorsey had a version with Teddy Walters on the vocals. The song was emotionally moving for those involved in the end of World War II.

The Platters, who were managed at one point by Buck Ram, had great success with the song.  In 1958, their version rose to #1 on both the U.S. Pop Singles Chart and the R&B Chart. This song features Tony Williams on lead vocals. The other group members for the single included Herbert Reed, David Lynch, Paul Robi, and Zola Taylor. The Platters, from Los Angeles, were pioneers of this first era of rock and roll, combining R&B, doo-wop, pop, and rock.

Buck Ram  also produced and arranged for The Penguins, The Coasters, The Drifters, Ike and Tina Turner, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Ella Fitzgerald, and many, many more.
