The Poni Tails Born Too Late

The Poni Tails Born Too Late

Girl Groups

This golden oldie from 50s pop music was written by composer and lyricist Charles Strouse (e.g., “Bye Bye Birdie”) and Fred Tobias. “Born Too Late” by The Poni Tails was originally the B-Side to “Come On Joey, Dance with Me,” but it became the more popular song. In 1958, it went to #7 on the U.S. Billboard Pop Chart, #11 on the R&B Chart, and #5 in the U.K.

The Poni Tails (aka The Poni-Tails) were a girl vocal group from Lyndhurst, Ohio, who started singing together in High School. The original members were Toni Cistone, Karen Topinka, and Patti McCabe. Topinka left the group and was replaced by LaVerne Novak, who is on “Born Too Late.”

Here are the lyrics to “Born Too Late’ by The Poni Tails:

“Born too late for you to notice me
To you, I’m just a kid that you won’t date
Why was I born too late?

Born too late to have a chance to win your love
Oh, why, oh, why was it my fate
To be born too late?

I see you walk with another
I wish it could be me
I long to hold you and kiss you
But I know it never can be, for I was

Born too late for you to care, now my heart cries
Because your heart just couldn’t wait
Why was I born too late?

Born too late for you to care, now my heart cries
Because your heart just couldn’t wait
Why was I born too late?
Why was I born too late, too late?”
