The Shirelles Baby It's You

R&B

The song “Baby It’s You” was written by Burt Bacharach (music), Luther Dixon (credited as Barney Williams), and Mack David (lyrics). It went to #3 on the R&B Charts and #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. There have been many covers, including very successful ones by The Beatles and Smith. A feature of this song is its minor-to-major key chord changes on the verses.

The Shirelles, from Passaic, New Jersey, formed in 1957, originally as The Poquellos. They were Shirley Owens (now Shirley Alston-Reeves), Doris Coley (later Doris Kenner-Jackson), Addie “Micki” Harris ((later Addie Harris McPherson), and Beverly Lee. Recognition for the group includes the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1994 as well as acceptance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002. Rolling Stone considers The Shirelles one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Here are the lyrics to “Baby It’s You” by The Shirelles:

“Shalalalalala Shalalalalala
Shalalalala Shalalalalala

It’s not the way you smile that touched my heart
It’s not the way you kiss that tears me apart
But how many many many nights roll by
I sit alone at home and cry over you
What can I do
I can’t help myself
‘Cause baby it’s you
Baby it’s you

You should hear what they say about you (cheat, cheat)
They say, they say you never never ever been true (cheat, cheat)

Wo ho, it doesn’t matter what they say
I know I’m gonna love you any old way
What can I do, when it’s true
Don’t want nobody, nobody
‘Cause baby it’s you
Baby it’s you

Baby it’s you
Wo ho, ho baby, many many nights roll by
I sit alone at home and cry over you
What can I do

Can’t help myself
‘Cause baby it’s you
Baby it’s you
Baby it’s you
Don’t leave me all alone

Come on home
Baby it’s you
Baby it’s you”

For others songs by The Shirelles: “Soldier Boy,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “Mama Said,” and “Foolish Little Girl.”
