Doo Wop Groups
The Students formed in Cincinnati in 1956. The members included Leroy King, Dorsey Porter, Roy Ford, John Bolden, Richard Johnson, and guitarist Ralph Byrd. Their songs “I’m So Young” and “Every Day of the Week” became doo wop classics. Both were written by fellow Cincinnatian William H. “Prez” Tyus, Jr., who managed the group. “Every Day of the Week” relies on more of an uptempo novelty approach rather than being a ballad of love, romance, and innocence. It’s full of joy. The song was issued as a Note singled in 1958 and then reissued as a Checker Single later that year. There was another reissue as an Argo single in 1961.
“Every Day of the Week” was featured in an episode of The Sopranos. “I’m So Young” has been covered numerous times, including versions by The Beach Boys, Rosie and the Originals, and The Ronettes.
