Tonight I Fell in Love by The Tokens

"Tonight I Fell in Love" by The Tokens

Doo Wop

The song “Tonight I Fell in Love” is a happy song about the joy of falling in love. It was written by group members of The Tokens Mitchell Margo, Philip Margo, and Henry Medress. In 1961, the song went to #15 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Group members for the record were the three mentioned and Jay Siegel.

The Tokens formed in 1955 in Brooklyn and was first called the Linc-Tones. They are best known for their hit “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” as well as “I Heard Trumpets Blow” and “Portrait of My Love.” There were many changes in the group’s lineup, and Neil Sedaka was a member at one time. The group formed their own production company called Bright Tunes and their own label called B. T. Puppy.

Here are the lyrics to “Tonight I Fell in Love” by The Tokens:

“Dum, doobie dum, whoa, doobie, doobie
Dum, doobie dum, whoa, doobie, doobie
Dum, doobie dum, whoa, tonight I fell in love
Whoa

Tonight, tonight I fell in love
I want the stars above
To know tonight I fell in love

Tonight, I gave my heart away
To love that can stay
‘Cause tonight I fell in love

Oh, what a wonder, this magic spell I’m under
This feeling that I feel, is it really real?
My heart beats so fast, I pray that it will last
‘Til the end of time

Dum, doobie dum, whoa, doobie, doobie
Dum, doobie dum, whoa, doobie, doobie
Dum, doobie dum, whoa, tonight I fell in love
Whoa

Tonight, oh, may it last forever
Forever and ever
Yes, tonight I fell in love
Yes, tonight I fell in love
Yes, tonight I fell in love”

  1. Jay Siegel said their Mother wrote Tonight I fell in love on a PBS show. They may have meant she was a contributor in a “group write”.
