The song “True Love Ways” is one of the beautiful golden oldies from this first era of rock and roll. The song was written by Buddy Holly (and also credited to Norman Petty) song as a wedding gift to Holly’s wife Maria Elena. “True Love Ways” is said to be inspired by one of Holly’s favorite Gospel songs, “I’ll be Alright.” Holly recorded “True Love Ways” with the Ray Ellis Orchestra in October, 1958.
The instrumentalists on the track were: Al Caiola on guitar, Sanford Block on bass, Ernie Hayes on piano, Doris Johnson on harp, Abraham Richman on sax and Clifford Leeman on drums. This strings were arranged by Dick Jacobs. The song was first released after his Holly’s death in 1959 on the album The Buddy Holly Story, Vol. 2. A single was released in 1960 with “That Makes It Tough” as the B-side.
Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7, 1936, in Lubbock Texas. He was a singer, songwriter, producer, and performer. During his short career, Holly was able to merge the sounds of rockabilly, country music, and R&B to help make rock and roll popular. He died on February 3, 1959, at the age of 22 in a plane crash along with Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, and the pilot Roger Peterson. It became known as “the day the music died.”

Wow. We were all so sad on the “day the music died.” Think of what they could have gone on to do. These aren’t golden oldies to me.

It’s very romantic that he wrote it for his wife. He really was one of the pioneers of rock and roll we lost too soon.
The day the music died. Think of what he could have gone on to do. Love 1950s music. Thx.
