The Everly Brothers Wake Up Little Susie

Don and Phil Everly were both guitarists and sang a beautiful, close harmony where each line can often stand on its own as a melody line. In addition to their harmonic style, they brought elements of country and pop music into rock and roll. Don was born in 1937 and Phil in 1939. They sang professionally before their teens, as their father Ike Everly was a guitarist and performer. Phil passed away in 2014. About their music, Don said: “We never followed trends. We did what we liked and followed our instincts. Rock’n’roll did survive, and we were right about that. Country did survive, and we were right about that. You can mix the two but people said we couldn’t.”

Here are the lyrics to “Wake Up Little Susie” by The Everly Brothers:

“Wake up little Susie, wake up
Wake up little Susie, wake up
We both fell sound asleep
Wake up little Susie and weep
The movie’s over, it’s four o’clock And we’re in trouble deep

Wake up little Susie, wake up little Susie
Well, what are we gonna tell your mama?
What are we gonna tell your pa?
What are we gonna tell our friends
When they say “Ooh la la”?

Wake up little Susie, wake up little Susie
Well I told your mama that you’d be in by ten
Well Susie baby looks like we goofed again
Wake up little Susie, wake up little Susie
We gotta go home

Wake up little Susie, wake up
Wake up little Susie, wake up
The movie wasn’t so hot
It didn’t have much of a plot
We fell asleep, our goose is cooked
Our reputation is shot

Wake up little Susie, wake up little Susie
Well, what are we gonna tell your mama?
What are we gonna tell your pa?
What are we gonna tell our friends
When they say “Ooh la la”?

Wake up little Susie
Wake up little Susie
Wake up little Susie”
