The beautiful golden oldie “Will You Love Me” by The Shirelles is a great song from a great girl group of the doo wop era. One never knows the future, which is the insecurity described in the lyrics. The song, which is also known as “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” was written by prolific team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King. Shirley Owens (who later became Shirely Alston-Reeves),the lead singer of The Shirelles, initially thought the song was “too Country and Western” for a four-girl group from Passaic, New Jersey. Their producer Luther Dixon helped them do it in their style, with strings and more uptempo. Carole King played timpani on the recording. In 1960, the song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B Chart. There have been numerous covers of this song, including those by Brenda Lee, Ben E. King, The Chiffons, The Kesterls, Dusty Springfield, Len Barry, Lesley Gore, Jackie DeShannon, Cher, The Four Seasons, Linda Ronstadt, Bruce Springsteen, Carole King, Robert Flack, Dave Mason, Dionne Warwick, Patti LaBelle, Neil Diamond, Neil Diamond, and Amy Winehouse — just to name a few.
The Shirelles formed in 1957, originally as The Poquellos (or The Pequellos). The group consisted of schoolmates Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie Harris, and Beverly Lee. Their sweet vocals and harmonies make them one of the great girl groups of this era.
