You Belong to Me by The Duprees

The Duprees You Belong to Me

Doo Wop

The song “You Belong To Me” as done by The Duprees is beautiful doo wop music. Wherever in the world you go, no matter how exotic, the singer says, you belong to me. It’s a universal song about separated lovers. The Duprees weren’t the first to record this song, as it’s truly a golden oldie – or the last. (Just a few to do the song were Sue Thompson, Jo Stafford, Patti Page, Dean Martin, Patsy Cline, and the list goes on.) The Duprees’ version  features doo wop harmonies and a big band arrangement by bandleader and Coed Records owner George Paxton. It went to #7 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1962.

Here are the lyrics to “You Belong to Me” by The Duprees:

“See the pyramids along the Nile
Watch the sun rise on a tropic isle
Just remember, darling, all the while
You belong to me.

See the marketplace in old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
But remember when a dream appears
You belong to me.

I’ll be so alone without you
Maybe you’ll be lonesome too—and blue

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
Watch the jungle when it’s wet with rain
Just remember till you’re home again
You belong to me”

The Duprees were from Jersey City, New Jersey, and consisted of  Michael Arnone, Joe Santollo, John Salvato, Tom Bialoglow and Joey Canzano (later known as Joey Vann).  Membership in the group has changed over the years, but they’re still touring and giving live performances.

For More Golden Oldies Music

The Daily Doo Wop Rec Room has daily featured doo wop, rock and roll, R&B, or rockabilly songs that were hits during the first era of rock and roll (that is, from about 1952 until the British invasion in 1964). After a song is featured, it then goes into the juke box. You are welcome to listen to any of the 40+ selections there. Every weekend, there is a Golden Oldies Juke Box Saturday Night, and the juke box is full of song requests from the 1950s and 1960s.
